New York Jets: Early 3-round 2019 NFL Draft in November
Round 3 (70th overall): Chris Lindstrom, OG, Boston College
For Gang Green in 2018, it hasn’t just been the tackles, but the interior of the offensive line as well. It’s not that they have had a terrible season, but the play on the inside has been so inconsistent that it’s difficult to develop a consistent plan of attack.
Lindstrom will provide the Jets with a dual-threat guard. He’s very strong in the running game who can sustain blocks long enough and open the holes for a patient runner. He’s also athletic. He can pull for the outside runs, and he’s quick enough to get to the second level to take on linebackers. He’s a handsy blocker, which makes him a quality pass blocker as well.
The addition of Lindstrom will help the play action game as well. The Jets have run 67 play action plays in 2018. According to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), among quarterbacks with a minimum of 64 dropbacks in play action, Darnold had the lowest completion percentage, yards, yards per attempt, and is tied for the most interception on play action — despite being 11th overall in the NFL in dropbacks on play action.
There’s no real threat of the run. With better interior line play, there would be a better threat of the run, and better numbers on play actions, and that would open up more of the offense for Darnold to run. Lindstrom would provide that immediately as he can play day one.
