For the sake of the future of Sam Darnold, the New York Jets must wait until the season is over to fire anyone.

It seems to be a ritual followed by fans of the New York Jets on a regular basis. It seems like every three or four years they want the coach fired, and after they realize it may have been poor management, they call for the general manager to be fired.

There’s one difference in 2018, though. Many fans believe Gang Green finally has their franchise quarterback, and if that’s the case, they can’t mess this up.

The Jets need a complete overhaul, the front office and coaching staff should be completely new in 2019. Many people are calling for head coach Todd Bowles to be fired after the game against the Buffalo Bills, but that would be a huge mistake. Heads should roll, because there was a mandate of improvement for this team from Christopher Johnson at the beginning of the season, but it can’t happen right now.

General manager Mike Maccagnan had a say in hiring Bowles, and he’s responsible for the personnel decisions that put Bowles in the mess he’s in. So he has to go. A new general manager will likely want to bring in a new head coach, meaning Bowles has to go. And a new coach will likely want to bring in his own staff. Thus, the assistants have to go too.

Firing Bowles now and bringing in an interim would be a huge mistake, with one caveat. If the interim coach can earn the job, then it’s okay. Otherwise, bringing in a placeholder, or even using someone on the current staff as a placeholder, is a mistake. It would mean Darnold would have three head coaches in his first two seasons.

You can say that it worked out for Jared Goff, but we have more examples of changing coaches midseason not working out. In the end, it would be better to wait for the sake of the future of the franchise rather than making a decision now. The Jets can’t hire quality replacements for anyone now anyway. So, they might as well wait to fire anyone until the end of the season.
