Defensive Coordinator: Dom Capers

The Jets need to emulate the Rams in this hire. They need an experienced NFL defensive coordinator and give him full autonomy over the defense in the way that Wade Phillips has in Los Angeles. Dom Capers is the guy for the Jets in this pursuit.

Dom Capers will be 69 by the start of the 2019 season, but age is just a number, as we see Phillips thriving in Los Angeles. Capers is a very capable defensive mind who can help the Jets become the defense they want to be.

Football used to be about running the football and stopping the run. In today’s NFL, it’s all about pass defense and getting to the quarterback. When it comes to overall defense, though, defenses run by Capers have been top-10 overall units eight times and top-10 scoring defenses 10 times. In terms of pass defense, he has led defenses to a top-10 ranking 10 times and also had 20 or more interceptions nine times.

Even though Riley is the head coach, he needs to treat this the way McVay does in Los Angeles to make this work. Let Capers be the guy that Philips is and run the ship on defense. That will be the key to their success.
