Tight Ends

Vance McDonald at Jacksonville

2018 Stats: 30 receptions, 390 yards, 2 TD
ESPN Ownership: 47 percent

Vance McDonald makes his way back on the list, and at this point, I might have to start charging him rent. A few weeks ago, us in the fantasy community were debating on whether or not McDonald was the Steelers No. 1 tight end in fantasy. Heading into Week 11, McDonald leads James in targets (37-28) despite being significantly out-snapped by his counterpart. He was able to find his way into the end zone against the Panthers last week to cap a 14 point performance.

The Steelers travel to Jacksonville to take on a struggling Jaguars team. In last year’s playoff game, McDonald was targeted a whopping 16 times, catching 10 balls for 112 yards. With tough sledding ahead for James Conner and top-tier corners to cover Antonio Brown, McDonald may very well find himself as Big Ben’s go-to guy again.

Jonnu Smith at Indianapolis

2018 Stats: 10 receptions, 122 yards, 2 TD
ESPN Ownership: 0.6 percent

The future of Delanie Walker is uncertain, but all signs point to Walker not being able to make a comeback from injured reserve in 2018. Enter Jonnu Smith, who has now quietly scored touchdowns two weeks in a row for Tennessee. Smith, only hauling in three passes as a season high in 2018, has been touchdown dependent for his fantasy stock. However, the improved play of Mariota has shot the value of Smith up slightly.

Using the same logic for Mariota’s suggested waiver add, game-flow should favor the Titans throwing the football, which has led to a successful last two weeks for the second-year tight end. It’s clear Smith’s volume isn’t favorable, yet as long as Mariota is keeping his performance, his security blanket should be there when needed. Smith isn’t my absolute favorite play out of the tight end group in Week 11. Yet, if you’re looking to roll the dice and need a tight end, Smith might surprise again for a third straight week.
