Fred Warner

He’s unlikely to win Defensive Rookie of the Year playing on a 2-8 team, but Fred Warner is enjoying an outstanding rookie season and was at his best again on Monday night.

Warner did not light up the stat sheet in ways that he has at other times in the 2018 season, but did an excellent job in helping the 49ers contain Saquon Barkley in the run game, shooting his gaps and attacking downhill against the ultra-dynamic fellow rookie. Warner was similarly effective against the pass, as well.

Alert to the football and quick to react, Warner registered a pair of pass breakups, taking his tally for the season to five, one shy of the most he had in any of his four collegiate seasons at BYU. He’s proving to be tremendous dropping back into coverage from the linebacker position.

Missing from Warner’s game are interceptions — he had seven in college, but has yet to pick off a pass for the Niners in his rookie campaign. However, if he continues to perform as he did against the Giants, they will surely follow for a player who is emerging as one of the best young all-around linebackers in the game.
