Green Bay Packers: Davante Adams on pace for historic season

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams is on pace to have one of the best seasons in franchise history.

For the past several years, the Green Bay Packers have enjoyed exceptional production from whoever has been their No. 1 wide receiver. From Donald Driver, to Greg Jennings, to Jordy Nelson and now Davante Adams, the Packers are no strangers to star-studded play at the receiver position.

In a season where Aaron Rodgers has had unfamiliar faces to throw to, Adams has shown up when the moments were brightest.

During a pivotal matchup against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night — a game which saw Jimmy Graham exit due to a thumb injury — Adams reeled in 10 receptions (12 targets) for 166 yards, averaging out to 16.6 yards per reception.

His biggest play came on a 57-yard go-route in which the opposing defender was holding back his left arm during the catch. Adams still managed to haul it in with his right arm, despite the no-call for defensive pass interference.

Adams has been Rodgers’ go-to target the entire season. He’s already seen 106 passes thrown his way through 10 games, and is currently on pace for 170 targets by season’s end. The most amount of targets Adams has previously seen in an entire season is 121.

On his 106 targets thus far, Adams has managed to catch 72 passes for 953 yards and nine touchdowns, putting him on a record-setting pace. If he keeps up his current pace, Adams could finish the season with 115 receptions, 1,525 yards and 14 touchdowns.

If Adams were to reach those heights, he’d log the most receptions and receiving yards in a single season in franchise history, while his 14 touchdowns would put him tied for fourth-most in a season.

It’s not like he’s facing easy competition either. When looking at who Adams has gone up against, his statistics become even more impressive. Here are the notable cornerbacks that Adams has faced in 2018:

  • Xavier Rhodes (former All-Pro and Pro Bowler)
  • Josh Norman (former All-Pro and Pro Bowler)
  • Tre’Davious White (former PFWA All-Rookie team)
  • Darius Slay (former All-Pro and Pro Bowler)
  • Richard Sherman (former All-Pro and Pro Bowler)
  • Marcus Peters (former All-Pro and Pro Bowler)
  • Stephon Gilmore (former Pro Bowler)
  • Xavien Howard
  • Shaquill Griffin

Other cornerbacks Adams is slated to face this year include another matchup against Rhodes, Fuller and Slay, with Patrick Peterson, Desmond Trufant and Morris Claibrone also on the docket.

Adams could have even more pressure on his shoulders in the remaining six games, as well. The Packers reportedly fear that Graham’s thumb injury is serious (according to Mike Silver of NFL.com), which could mean even more attention for Adams from opposing defenses – not to mention the fact that Green Bay is in a desperate situation to make the playoffs.
