Green Bay Packers: Mike McCarthy era should come to a close
By Hunter Noll
The Green Bay Packers are severely underperforming in 2018, which is just another sign that this should be the end of Mike McCarthy in Green Bay.
For years, the Green Bay Packers have felt kind of disappointing. They have one of the best quarterbacks of all time, but seem to have areas of struggle every season. It might be time for a coaching change as things are starting to pile up on Mike McCarthy.
Returning from injury, you could say that Aaron Rodgers has been “off” with a few of his throws this season. Even considering that, the quarterback has 19 touchdowns compared to just one interception. He’s also on pace for nearly 5,000 yards. Meanwhile, Davante Adams is an elite receiver. Jimmy Graham is still a useful weapon and Aaron Jones is emerging at running back. Then there’s the defense that’s been surprisingly strong.
Despite all that, the Packers are in third place in the NFC North, sitting at 4-5-1. Have they played perfectly? Not at all. They’ve outplayed a 4-5-1 record, though. And that’s when you have to look at the coaching.
McCarthy’s been on the hot seat before, but the seat would cool off when the Packers warmed up. This season is different though. For one thing, this is far from the first time Green Bay has put their backs against the wall with McCarthy at the helm. Then there’s the most recent news that McCarthy and Rodgers aren’t seeing eye-to-eye. (via Austin Knoblauch of NFL.com)
If Rodgers isn’t on the same page as McCarthy, there’s only one answer as to who the Packers would side with. They would be smart to do whatever they have to in order to keep their franchise quarterback happy.
Rodgers has orchestrated season turnarounds in the past. The Packers shouldn’t have to bank on that as often as they do though. Mike McCarthy might not be the lone problem, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t time for a change.
