Denver Broncos: RT Daryl Williams

Last August, offensive tackle Jared Veldheer took time away from the Arizona Cardinals to contemplate his playing career after reviewing a chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) study. During the previous offseason, Arizona traded him to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a sixth-round selection. His contract will expire in March.

Over the last three seasons, Veldheer has missed 17 games because of torn triceps during the 2016 term and an ankle injury this year. When combined with his fleeting thoughts about retirement, it’s best the Broncos move on with a younger player at the position even if it costs more money.

Regardless of who starts under center in the next campaign, the Broncos must protect the quarterback. Case Keenum has been sacked 24 times in nine outings.

Right tackle Daryl Williams only suited up for one game this season because of a knee issue. He tore his MCL and dislocated his kneecap during a training camp practice in July then sustained a new injury to the same knee in Week 1 and underwent surgery.

Despite the unfortunate luck with his knee, Williams should hit the free-agent market as a hot commodity if the Panthers don’t re-sign him. He engaged in extension talks with the team before the injury.

Williams served as a starter in 29 games since entering the league as a fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2015. He became a consistent starting right tackle in the following year. Looking for his second deal at a premium position, expect a high asking price, but he’s certainly worth the cost. The 26-year-old could help stabilize the Broncos offensive line for the long term.
