Jacksonville Jaguars: RG J.R. Sweezy

As long as the Jacksonville Jaguars commit to quarterback Blake Bortles, the offense must have a dominant ground attack to open up passing lanes. The front office has to come to terms with the team’s offensive identity—move away from stocking up on wide receivers and invest in assets to sustain a strong rushing offense.

Right guard A.J. Cann is set to test the free-agent market. As a result, Jacksonville needs to consider his long-term replacement barring an extension. The Jaguars signed guard Andrew Norwell to a five-year, $66.5 million deal during the previous offseason. They don’t have to necessarily spend big at the position in consecutive years. A player on a rebound season should suffice to fill the void.

The Seattle Seahawks have re-committed to their ground attack, ranking No. 1 in rushing attempts and yards through 10 weeks. Guard J.R. Sweezy has contributed to their success in that area. He’s down in the trenches clearing lanes. Before a rough outing against the Los Angeles Rams Sunday, he allowed just one sack in his first nine games, per PFF.

General manager John Schneider brought Sweezy back to Seattle for a second stint with the team after Tom Cable’s exit to the Oakland Raiders. He’s performed well following a struggle year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a pass protector.

The Jaguars should have their sights set on a versatile guard, coming off a solid campaign, who can play on both sides of the offensive line in a starting role. It’s a necessary investment to elevate Leonard Fournette and Carlos Hyde as ball-carriers.
