Los Angeles Chargers: ILB C.J. Mosley

As a preface to this selection, it’s worth mentioning the Baltimore Ravens should undoubtedly re-sign linebacker C.J. Mosley as the quarterback of their defense. However, with head coach John Harbaugh’s seat heating up as the team struggles at 4-5, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, there’s no guarantee that he’ll return. A new coaching staff may move some roster assets around in the offseason.

If Mosley hits the free-agent market, his production speaks for itself. He’s a three-time Pro Bowler who can play downhill against the run or backpedal to cover the intermediate passing lanes. The 26-year-old has recorded 366 solo tackles, 32 pass breakups, eight sacks, eight interceptions and six forced fumbles as one of the rare complete linebackers in the NFL.

The Alabama product has been the quarterback of the Ravens defense over the last few seasons as well. Assuming the Los Angeles Chargers move on from oft-injured linebacker Denzel Perryman, Mosley would walk into Los Angeles as an iron man compared to the incumbent. The Ravens defender has only missed three games over the past five terms.

The Chargers have two top-notch pass-rushers in Joey Bosa, when healthy, and Melvin Ingram on the defensive line. Still, Mosley could supplement the pocket pressure to compensate for injuries if necessary, which would help the secondary.

A high-end playmaker in the middle of the field, who’s consistently available, should propel this defense back to top-three scoring status similar to the 2017 campaign. A capable leader at the position can pull the collective talent together as a formidable unit.

The Chargers must consider Mosley with a high-octane offense in the Kansas City Chiefs, shredding defenses week-to-week.
