Carolina Panthers: WR Golden Tate

The Carolina Panthers’ last general manager Dave Gettleman selected wide receiver Devin Funchess in the second round of the 2015 draft. So it wouldn’t be a surprise to see current front office executive Marty Hurney go in another direction at the position instead of re-signing the Michigan product.

Furthermore, the Panthers have a new offensive coordinator in Norv Turner, who’s done a good job at improving the passing attack with quick-twitch receivers capable of extending plays after the catch. Lastly, quarterback Cam Newton is completing a career-high 68.5 percent of his passes with the group in place.

At 6-4, 225 pounds, Funchess classifies as a big-body receiver. He also came into the league with some analysts viewing him as a possible option at tight end because of his experience at the position on the collegiate level. The Panthers could look to add another high-end catch-and-run option, which fits Turner’s scheme.

The Detroit Lions sent Golden Tate to the Philadelphia Eagles before the trade deadline, probably to avoid allowing him to walk in free agency without a return. Barring an extension, his contract will expire at the end of the season. He should demand about $14 – $15 million per year in a new deal because of his consistency.

Tate has caught 90 passes in four consecutive seasons between 2014-17 with 1,000 yards in three of those terms. After his rookie season, his catch rate hasn’t dipped below 60 percent. The 30-year-old could immediately elevate the Panthers aerial attack as a contributor while rookie D.J. Moore finds his way. Tate would also serve as a model example for the Maryland product.
