Round 2: David Montgomery, RB, Iowa State

I know LeSean McCoy and Chris Ivory are currently on the books for the Buffalo Bills in 2019. However, with both backs on the wrong side of 30, the Bills are better off cutting bait. Moreover, McCoy’s 3.4 yards per carry average and two touchdowns are just pedestrian. Additionally, if they cut or trade McCoy, they could free up over $6 million in cap space. Either way, they need a back who can help take pressure off Allen.

Iowa State running back, David Montgomery is the type of old school back that can carry the load. He’s the best pure runner in the entire to draft in my book. What he does after contact is comparable to backs like Travis Henry and Marshawn Lynch. Like Frank Gore, he always falls forward and does a fantastic job fighting for extra yards rather than just going down.

Montgomery uses every bit of his 5-11, 216-pound frame. His legs are always churning forward and he looks to punish defenders. He does a great job creating something out of nothing. What he lacks as a receiver — a concern in the developing modern NFL — he makes up for his ability as a blocker and workhorse back.

However, he does look very comfortable running routes. A patient runner with a solid jump cut, a wide running base, powerful cuts and really good quickness. There isn’t a back better than Montgomery in this draft.
