New York Jets: Historic Chiefs-Rams game should guide future
Say no to Nick Bosa in the draft
Build through the draft is the mantra of many. When a generational talent comes along, teams can’t pass him up, and it would be a huge mistake to do so. The way contracts are structured in today’s game (and I don’t see it changing much in the next collective bargaining agreement in 2020), you need to get the most out of the offense while you can, and build around the franchise quarterback.
This is why if Nick Bosa is the best player available, the Jets should avoid drafting him. If there’s no one available to put around Sam Darnold, the Jets should trade down and accumulate picks. The Jets need to focus on the offensive side of the ball — especially early — in the 2019 NFL Draft.
The Jets need to make a concerted effort on the defensive side of the ball in free agency. Put all their efforts in landing one (or two) of the top pass rushers. Then they can focus all of their draft efforts on offense.
They need to land playmakers and offensive linemen in the draft. It would be nice to land Le’Veon Bell in free agency, but as a contingency plan, let’s not forget that Alvin Kamara and Kareem Hunt were both second-day draft picks, and Tevin Coleman is available via free agency as well.
Sure, Bosa looks like a generational talent, and it’s difficult to pass that up. However, Darnold also is widely considered as a generational talent as well, and he’s already in the fold. The Jets don’t want to mess that up by not providing him with the necessary pieces to succeed.
Bosa is just one player. If the Jets can get more, they should stay away.
