NFL Draft: Grading each 2018 first-round pick after Week 11
By Randy Gurzi
6. Indianapolis Colts: Quenton Nelson, G
One player who was far and away the best at his position entering the 2018 NFL Draft was Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson. The Irish have turned out some great blockers in recent seasons but Nelson could very well turn out to be the best of the bunch.
He’s actually got so much potential that No. 6 felt kind of low for him. The fact is, Nelson could have been taken in the top four, had he played another position.
Be that as it may, this is an incredibly high spot for a guard to go and the Colts have no issues with what they have gotten with their pick. Even more impressive is the fact they moved down from No. 3 to 6 and still got an elite talent at a position of need. On top of that, they added more draft picks — which they also did well on.
While all that is great, we judge this pick solely on what Nelson has done. So far, he finds himself as rated as a solid starting guard in the NFL. The Colts are a team on the rise and players like Nelson are giving them a much tougher identity, especially in the run game.
Not all has been perfect though as Nelson is still refining his technique as a run blocker. He has improved upon some early season struggles and will get better, but there’s still some work to be done to get mentioned among the best in the game.
