Minnesota Vikings: Early 7-round 2019 mock draft
There’s a very good chance that Derrick Baity ends up going much earlier than this. However, at this moment, the Kentucky cornerback is still flying under the radar. So the Vikings spending a fourth-round pick to acquire his services sounds reasonable.
A star senior for the Wildcats, Baity has spent all season shining for one of the SEC’s surprise top teams. When he’s in the game, his side of the field is nearly off limits. On more than one occasion this season, he’s essentially nullified the opponent’s top receiver.
On top of that, he’s got the size Mike Zimmer loves in his cornerbacks. Measuring in at 6-3, 190 pounds, Baity offers the length that’s become so popular in today’s NFL. Tie in his natural abilities in coverage, and it only seems right to have him on the Vikings’ list of potential mid-round targets.
Now you may be wondering why Minnesota’s defense needs a cornerback. It’s a reasonable question with a logical answer. Xavier Rhodes is still set as the top cover man, but Trae Waynes is in a contract year and likely won’t be re-signed. Mackensie Alexander is a perfect fit in the slot, and Mike Hughes is still an unknown. Behind them, only Holton Hill offers upside for the Vikings.
Considering today’s pass-happy NFL, it’s best to have four or five capable contributors at cornerback. Especially if Waynes departs, adding Baity to the depth chart would be a wise investment.
