There’s a lot to like about Terrill Hanks as a late-round prospect. Relatively unknown as a star for an awful New Mexico State squad, the tremendously athletic linebacker has the potential to develop into a quality backup and special teams ace at the next level.

More than anything, Hanks is just a playmaker. On top of being an instinctive, athletic linebacker who flies around the field, he often punishes ball carriers with big hits and powerful takedowns. There are obviously some parts of his game that need improvement, but the foundation he’s built with the Aggies should be more than enough to keep him on the NFL’s radar.

The Vikings are going to need to address the outside linebacker position this offseason. Anthony Barr is headed for free agency, and seems unlikely to return to the Twin Cities. While filling the role with someone like Eric Wilson isn’t the worst idea, Zimmer figures to at least give himself some options. Hence, the selection of Hanks.

Plus, Spielman has drafted a linebacker in the seventh round every season since he stepped in as general manager. Seeing as the Vikings don’t currently own a pick in the final round, though, it just made sense to keep the traditional going — just one round earlier.
