Round 3 (Second Pick): Yodny Cajuste, OT, West Virginia

Cajuste will fall in the draft for one reason. He plays in the Big 12, and it’s hard to judge offensive linemen in that conference due to the fact that the defenses in the league are so bad. However, there are a few things that need to be considered. First is that the modern NFL has a tendency to look like the offensive-minded Big 12 these days.

What’s more, even though the defenses are “bad”, you can still see things that stand out, and thus, make a distinction on the ability at the next level. Cajuste is a strong and physical player in both the run an pass game. He can provide a blocker downfield in the run game, and has the strength in his lower half to handle bull rushers at the point of attack.

In terms of pass protection, he’s well balanced and uses his hands well. That said, he has some work needed at the next level. He can play right away for the Jets, but he will be tested by the speed of the game.

He’s good enough in this pass-happy NFL to be a successful tackle. It’ll be an adjustment to go from the Big 12 to the NFL, but in time he will be where he needs to be. Don’t give up to quickly on him. Plug him in Week 1, and with the right coaching he will grow to his greatest potential.
