Green Bay Packers: 5 Possible replacements for Mike McCarthy
2. Josh McDaniels, Offensive Coordinator, New England Patriots
It was reported in mid-November by NBC Sports Boston that, if the Packers were to fire Mike McCarthy, then they could be interested in current New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Well, McCarthy is now out in Green Bay, so it only makes sense to now include McDaniels among the list of candidates that could come in and be the next head coach of the Packers.
Of course, McDaniels came under heavy scrutiny this past offseason as he essentially backed out of a deal that was seemingly all done for him to be head coach of the Colts. His reputation from that debacle is undeniably damaged, but the fact remains that McDaniels has a fantastic track record as an offensive mind in the NFL and, given the opportunity, he should be able to have success with a team such as the Packers as a head coach.
1. Lincoln Riley, Head Coach, Oklahoma
It’s almost obligatory at this point to, when talking about potential head coaching candidates for the 2019 NFL offseason, throw Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley’s name into the mix. With two full seasons now showcasing what a brilliant offensive mind he is, it’s safe to say that Riley is the most coveted head coaching candidate in the world right now.
Now, there’s no guarantee that he would leave the Sooners. Having said that and looking at the landscape of potential head coaching vacancies in the NFL, it’s hard to find any (if there are any) that are as attractive a job as coaching Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. For a team that needs a spark to get themselves into contention in the modern NFL, Riley could be the guy that they need to do that.
