New York Jets 2019 NFL Draft Profile: Jonah Williams, Alabama
The New York Jets have a lot of holes, especially on the offensive line. Jonah Williams in one of the best at that position in the 2019 NFL Draft.
The New York Jets have begun their rebuilding process. They have the franchise quarterback in Sam Darnold and a presence on defense in Jamal Adams, both in the first round of the last two NFL Drafts. Winning football begins in the trenches, and in today’s NFL, it begins on the offensive side of the ball.
The Jets will have to focus on the offensive line in this draft. Alabama’s Jonah Williams is the best offensive tackle in this draft, and where they finish will go a long way in whether or not he’s available.
They need to find a way to protect Darnold. Williams is a plug-and-play tackle who could start Week 1 in the NFL. His length does present some limitations. He’d be better suited in a quick passing game, but that doesn’t mean to pass up on him given the nature of the NFL passing game.
In the NFL of this century, the key to passing game success is a good mix of deep drops and short passing games and relying on yards after the catch (leaning toward short and intermediate routes with YAC).
Williams uses his hand well, not having to reset much in one-on-one situations. When it comes to athleticism, he can recover if he’s beaten and has an ability to pull to set the edge on outside runs.
The Jets have been looking for the replacement for D’Brickashaw Ferguson — a first round and top-five pick himself — since his retirement. The Jets need that guy to protect Sam Darnold. Williams could be that guy, if selected. He can be the cornerstone of the offensive line for a long time to come.
