NFL Draft: 30 worst first-round picks of the 21st century
By Randy Gurzi
Recently, this player has gotten his career back on track, but it’s not been with the Los Angeles Rams, who drafted him back while they were still in St. Louis.
Looking for a legitimate blind-side protector, the Rams took Auburn’s Greg Robinson second overall. There weren’t many who thought he would be a bust. For whatever reason, he simply didn’t pan out for the Rams.
Robinson started his career at left tackle for the Rams, but he struggled to play the position very well. After a few seasons, they toyed with the idea of moving him to either guard or right tackle. They even added a big free agent in Andrew Whitworth ahead of the 2017 season to replace Robinson.
The former second overall pick never got the chance to try to redeem himself with Los Angeles though, as they shipped him to the Detroit Lions for a late-round pick. Injuries plagued him with the Lions and he was waived before the season was over. It wasn’t until June of 2018 that he found a new home as the Cleveland Browns came calling.
In recent weeks, Robinson has actually settled into a nice rhythm with Cleveland as a left tackle. He’s been an upgrade over undrafted rookie Desmond Harrison. While he’s not likely the long-term answer there, he’s been a serviceable option for the Browns and has helped his case to stick around as a valued swing tackle.
Cleveland deserves some praise here. Their names pop up a lot in this list, but this was one time they salvaged a big bust.
