Part of the Florida Gators’ National Championship team in 2007, defensive end Derrick Harvey was supposed to be the next big thing in the NFL. As a sophomore, he recorded 35 tackles and 11 sacks.

Then, he came out the following season and registered 49 tackles and 8.5 sacks. Playing in the SEC usually indicates that the player will succeed in the NFL as well, considering the level of talent they compete against in college.

For Harvey, that simply wasn’t the case. The first-ever first-round pick at defensive end for the Jacksonville Jaguars never got rolling in the pros. He recorded just 19 tackles and 3.5 sacks as a rookie.

He followed that up with 57 tackles, which seemed to indicate he was improving some as a player, but he still generated very little in the way of a pass rush. Harvey had just two sacks on the entire season.

Harvey played only one more season with the Jaguars, and that year was spent as a backup. He had only 12 tackles that year and 2.5 sacks. Harvey was waived after the season and went unclaimed. Harvey finished his time in Jacksonville as one of their worst picks of all-time.

He did get a couple more chances to make it work in the NFL, but those didn’t pan out either. He was with the Denver Broncos in 2011, but played in just five games for them. After this, he went to training camp with the Cincinnati Bengals, but lasted only into the first week of August before being let go by them.
