NFL Draft: 30 worst first-round picks of the 21st century
By Randy Gurzi
The poor Cleveland Browns are on this list yet again, this time for the first of their two horrendous picks in the 2014 NFL Draft. This was clearly a draft they hope to soon forget, as they were making moves up and down the board trying to find a way to get the players they wanted — at the positions they wanted to land them at.
Their plan ended with them taking Justin Gilbert at No. 8 and Johnny Manziel at No. 22. Both were big-name additions — and both became huge busts.
We will surely look at Manziel later, but as for Gilbert, the former Oklahoma State star lasted just two seasons and started only three games at corner for them.
At Oklahoma State, Gilbert was a stud corner and solid return man. He also lit up the NFL Scouting Combine with several impressive drills, including a lightning-fast 4.35 in the 40-yard dash.
That talent was never seen in the NFL, as Gilbert was said to have a bad attitude with the Browns while being unprepared, which was seen in his play. To highlight how bad he was for them, Cleveland traded him to a divisional rival for a mere sixth-round pick. That’s a far fall for a guy considered one of the best cornerbacks in the entire draft class.
He lasted only one season after his time with the Browns, as Gilbert never caught on with the Pittsburgh Steelers either. He was also suspended for the 2017 season, which likely ended killed any interest from another team — assuming there was some out there.
