NFL Draft: 30 worst first-round picks of the 21st century
By Randy Gurzi
No player in recent memory has entered the NFL with such a combination of hype mixed with questions. Texas A&M star Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy for his ability to pick teams apart with both his arm and legs. Conventional NFL wisdom said he couldn’t make it in the pros due to his size.
Listed at just under 6-foot-tall and 207 pounds, Manziel wasn’t the prototypical passer. On top of his size concerns, Manziel was famous for his improvisational skills. While it’s good to have that ability, relying on it solely for success in the NFL isn’t a great recipe.
Then, there were the off-field questions as well. Manziel was a well-known party boy who liked to live life in the fast lane. He was often seen drinking in excess and he even once was seen in a bathroom with money rolled up, which hinted at something more serious than alcohol.
The Cleveland Browns ignored all the flags as they fell in love with what “Johnny Football” did on the field. There was no doubt he was electric for Texas A&M and they used a second pick in the first round on his services. We already looked at Justin Gilbert as a bust and Manziel joins him as an even bigger flameout.
Manziel continued his partying ways and there were even reports of him showing up to practice drunk. He lasted just two seasons in Cleveland and is now trying for a comeback in the CFL. He’s not performing very well there, so it’s pretty unlikely that “Johnny Football” ever returns to the NFL.
