NFL Draft: 30 worst first-round picks of the 21st century
By Randy Gurzi
There’s a reason it’s been so long since the Cleveland Browns have been good. They find their way on this list again. Sadly, they’re not close to being done. In 2016, they were on the clock at No. 15 and they took the first wide receiver in that draft.
The choice was Corey Coleman out of Baylor, who was considered one of the top prospects in the draft that year. He had just put up 1,363 yards and 20 touchdowns at Baylor and looked like a highlight waiting to happen.
Coleman also tested well with a 4.39 40-yard dash, highlighting his athleticism. He just never could put it together with the Browns and left them with two lasting images. One was him dropping a fourth-down pass as they were driving to try to get a win in Week 17 of the 2017 season. His gaffe assured they would be the second 0-16 team in NFL history.
The other image was him barging into Hue Jackson’s office during the HBO series ‘Hard Knocks‘ and demanding to be traded if the Browns weren’t going to start him. Coleman was promptly sent to the Buffalo Bills for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2020. He didn’t make the final roster there and then went to the New England Patriots.
That stint was also short-lived, but Coleman landed on his feet again as the New York Giants picked him up in October. So far in 2018, he has two receptions for 20 yards. He can still salvage his career, but it doesn’t seem incredibly likely.
