NFL Draft: 30 worst first-round picks of the 21st century
By Randy Gurzi
Coming out of Penn State, Aaron Maybin was supposed to be a stud pass rusher for the Buffalo Bills, who took him at No. 11 overall. That seemed like a great spot as he was widely predicted to be a top-10 pick that season after working at Linebacker U.
He never came close to living up to his expectations though as he lasted just two seasons with the Bills. In that span, he had 23 total combined tackles and no sacks. He was released after those two seasons and ended up replacing another bust in Vernon Gholston with the New York Jets.
In his first season with the Jets, it seemed like Maybin was about to shake the bust label, as he had six sacks for New York. However, that was the last stretch of productivity in his professional career.
Maybin was cut following his second season with the Jets and was unable to catch on with the Cincinnati Bengals the following season. Maybin tried his hand in the CFL as well, but only had a cup of coffee with the Toronto Argonauts.
While Maybin didn’t pan out in the NFL, he’s recently surfaced in the news again for positive reasons. He’s now working in Baltimore as a teacher. Maybin is also a published author who is working to make some changes in his hometown. His story outside of football looks to be a better one than on the field.
