NFL Draft: 30 worst first-round picks of the 21st century
By Randy Gurzi
Earlier it was mentioned that the 2013 NFL Draft had its share of busts and here we get to our second. Jonathan Cooper was supposed to be an absolute stud coming out of North Carolina. The Arizona Cardinals were thrilled to land him one spot after Barkevious Mingo — who was the first 2013 bust we looked at.
Like Mingo, Cooper is still bouncing around the NFL as he’s at least a serviceable player, he just did nothing for the team that made this huge investment in his services. Also like Mingo, he was shipped to the New England Patriots when his first team was done with him.
In 2016, the Cardinals sent Cooper and a second round pick to the Patriots in exchange for Chandler Jones. He was there for just four games and never played a snap before being cut.
Cooper landed with the Browns, but was there only until December. He finished the season with the Dallas Cowboys, who actually had him serve as their left guard for most of the 2017 season.
2018 has been more like the year prior though, as Cooper started with the San Francisco 49ers before landing with the Washington Redskins, which is where he is now.
When Arizona drafted him they expected him to be the anchor of their offensive line. Instead, he missed his first season with a broken leg. He then played in just 24 games before starting his tour around the league. That’s a far cry from what the Cardinals expected.
