Seattle Seahawks: 3 Big takeaways from win vs. Vikings in Week 14
By Samuel Teets
The running game is the entire offense
It’s funny to consider, but the Seahawks are more reliant on the running game now than they were back when they had Marshawn Lynch. That sounds silly, I know, but the weird numbers the Seahawks offense posted on Monday prove it.
In the past I’ve said that the run game is more important than the passing game in Seattle. But the run game has literally become the entire offense. Russell Wilson threw the ball just 20 times and only completed 10 passed for 72 yards. It was his career low in passing yards, and his team still won by two touchdowns.
Carson was once again the hero of the offense. He carried the ball 22 times for 90 rushing yards and a touchdown. Wilson was the team’s second leading rusher with 61 yards on seven carries. At one point he broke off a 40-yard run, but I was surprised by his lack of speed. We haven’t gotten many opportunities to see Wilson scrambling for big chunks of yards this season, but I remember him being faster. That’s not super important, it’s just something I noticed during the game.
Rookie Rashaad Penny contributed as well with eight carries for 44 yards and Mike Davis only got three carries but still managed 22 yards. Taking all these numbers into account, along with negative-three rushing yards from Tyler Lockett, Seattle ran for 214 yards against the Vikings on 5.1 yards per carry. We’re seeing an entirely new Seahawks brand of offense this season.
