The New York Jets are more than one draft away from being a playoff team. As things stand right now, they should take an offensive lineman with their first pick in 2019.

According to Tankathon, the New York Jets have the fifth overall pick as things stand right now. Todd McShay of ESPN recently released his latest mock draft, and I agree with his sentiment that it would behoove them to trade back to get more picks to build this team. However, if they stay there, taking Clelin Ferrell — or any edge rusher — would be a mistake.

Ferrell is a talented edge rusher, and that’s one of the holes the Jets need to address. They need to address the offensive side of the ball before the defense. If the Jets really want to build around Sam Darnold, they need to start up front.

When it comes to developing chemistry and cohesion, it takes time on both sides of the ball. However, because of the deeper playbook, there’s more to learn on the offensive side of the ball. Even though the CBA is up after the 2019 season, and things may change in this regard, the limited practice schedule affects the offensive line the most.

That means you should always choose the offensive line over the edge rusher, unless there’s a generational talent available to you, then you have to weigh the options. Since Nick Bosa will likely be gone, then there’s no real choice for the Jets.

It would be nice if the Jets could have their cake and eat it too, but that’s not possible. They don’t have a second round pick, and they’ve taken a defensive player with 15 of the last 19 first round selections. It’s time for a change. It’s time to get out of the defense mindset. The future is now, and it begins with the offensive line.
