Round 1, Pick 5: Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama

With the way defenses move their pass rushers around, left and right side is becoming increasingly less relevant. Lane Johnson is a right tackle, but has been one of the best pass blockers in the league. That is why Williams is the top offensive tackle prospects in the draft.

When you watch the tape the one negative that stands out is his length. Despite being 6-5, his arms are relatively short. However, he does pack a punch off the snap, which is necessary for him to succeed.

Even though it’s become a passing league, you still need a semblance of balance to be successful, and Williams is one of the best run blocking tackles in the nation. He uses his size to his advantage, and he’s strong in the run game, but his size doesn’t limit him. He’s able to get to the outside and pull to lead the running back on edge.

When it comes to pass protection, he’s not necessarily elite, but he doesn’t have to be. Even though he has a disadvantage with his length, he’s a smart and relentless tackle. He will do anything within the boundaries of the rules to keep the defender engaged and will go low if need be. With his skills he’s a plug-and-play starter Week 1. He’s the guy they need for Darnold.
