New York Jets: 3-Round 2019 mock draft for mid December
Round 3, Pick 71: Chase Claypool, WR, Notre Dame
In today’s fantasy football and stat driven world, Chase Claypool will get lost in the shuffle of this draft. For those that look at his numbers, they won’t be eye-popping. However, that’s completely discounting who his quarterback was early, and what happened after the switch at quarterback for the Fighting Irish.
When the Notre Dame season began, their quarterback was Brandon Wimbush. He’s not an accurate passer, and the numbers of the wide receivers suffered because of that. Once Ian Book was inserted into the starting role, Claypool flourished. His receptions went up as a result of better accuracy, and he proved to be a good red zone threat. He only has four touchdowns, but some of that is the result of Wimbush being an inaccurate running quarterback.
Claypool is a good route runner and can create separation. He also will win many of the 50/50 battles through sheer determination and by outmuscling the opponent. He’s also a Hines Ward type that doesn’t mind getting down and dirty. As a result of his size — 6-4, 228 pounds — he’s an asset in the run game as a blocker. He can eliminate the corner and help set the edge for the running back.
Claypool isn’t widely considered a top receiver in the 2019 NFL Draft, but with the right system, he can be a threat and a No. 1 target for Sam Darnold. He’ll be a steal for the Jets if they can land him at No. 71.
