Round 3, Pick 94: Dexter Williams, RB, Notre Dame

Last season, it was a Giants decision to go with Saquon Barkley that led to Sam Darnold falling into the Jets lap. This season, it’ll be off-the-field issues that may aid the Jets in getting a talented player.

When the season began, Dexter Williams wasn’t on the field for Notre Dame. That’s because he was arrested for illegal possession of a handgun and possession of marijuana. However, when he returned to the Fighting Irish lineup, there was a noticeable change. He provided a spark out of the backfield.

Brian Kelly didn’t use Williams much as a pass catcher out of the backfield, but when he was he showed he was more than capable of doing the job. When he ran with the football, though, he forced the defense’s hand. They can’t stack the box for two reasons. The first was Ian Book was able to find open receivers and they can break the big play that way.

The second was Williams. Even against eight man fronts he could break big gains, because he has the power to take on one-on-one tacklers and break the tackle. He has a good combination of speed and power. He can be used in short-yardage situations to move the chains, or he can be the home run threat out of the backfield. Even if the Jets are able to land Le’Veon Bell, they should take Williams, because he and Bell would provide them with the one-two punch they need.
