The Dallas Cowboys still lead the NFC East, but have holes to still address in the 2019 NFL Draft, even if they have to do it without a first-round pick.

There was a time when things weren’t looking so great for Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys. People were calling for head coach Jason Garrett’s head midway through the 2018 season, but that seems like a long time ago. The negative surrounding the Cowboys has largely faded into oblivion as they’ve gone 5-2 in their last seven games, even with a bad loss to the Colts in Week 15.

Dallas’ defense has been the catalyst for their success all season. Teams are averaging a little over 18 points per game against the Cowboys, which is second best in the NFL. The 318 yards per game they give up (entering Week 15) is the fourth best mark in the league.

A major part of their defensive prowess comes courtesy of they linebacker play. They are lightning rods and make plays all over the field. Leighton Vander Esch looks like one of the leading candidates for Defensive Rookie of the Year and is flanked by Jaylon Smith, who has taken another major step forward this season.

Over the past few drafts, the Cowboys have hit on a number of picks. They’ve found steals like Smith and Dak Prescott. That’s important to remember since the Cowboys don’t have a first-round pick in 2019. That pick went to the Oakland Raiders in the trade for Amari Cooper, and it was worth the price.

Since arriving to the Cowboys, Cooper has changed the dynamic of their offense and seemingly galvanized the team, allowing them to crawl into the driver’s seat of the NFC East.

Without a first-round pick in 2019; the Cowboys will rely on that magic that allowed them to find those gems mentioned above when it comes to the 2019 NFL Draft. Starting with the second round then, let’s look at how they can fill their holes in the draft.
