5. Jacksonville Jaguars: Drew Lock, QB, Missouri

They finally pulled the plug. After years of pretending Blake Bortles wasn’t holding them back, the Jacksonville Jaguars admitted Blake Bortles was holding them back. He was benched for Cody Kessler, which all but guarantees they will be in the market for a new starter in 2019.

It was easy to see why they didn’t want to admit he wasn’t the guy. Not only did they use the No. 3 overall pick on him in 2014, but Bortles did have flashes of brilliance. He also was under center when they nearly made the Super Bowl following the 2017 season — and he played exceptionally well in the AFC title game.

However, they probably should have looked at the season as a whole before extending his contract. Rather than looking elsewhere before 2018, the Jags gave Bortles a three-year, $54 million extension and he didn’t even last the first year. Now they’ll likely have a lot of dead money and the same hole they had before the season began.

The good news for them is Drew Lock is still on the board in this 2019 NFL Mock Draft, and they would be thrilled to land him. Lock was considered to be the top quarterback for the first few weeks of this season, but the ceiling of Justin Herbert has him going higher. That doesn’t mean Lock is some consolation prize because he’s a legitimate NFL starter.

He’s got the size and arm strength teams desire and can make all the throws necessary. He’s done a lot at Missouri without a great offense around him and will be a starter very quickly for the Jags, should they be lucky enough to land him.
