Philadelphia Eagles: Can Nick Foles repeat magic from 2017?
By Carl Naimoli
The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Rams for their best win of 2018. Nick Foles is back leading the way and is ready to make a run at the playoffs.
The Philadelphia Eagles pulled off a most improbable upset In Week 15 when they defeated the Los Angeles Rams, 30-23, in LA. The Eagles were double-digit underdogs in this matchup, and were forced to play without their leader Carson Wentz due to injury. That didn’t matter to this team as reigning Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles led the way to the teams most impressive victory of the season.
The Eagles season appeared to be doomed after their devastating Week 14 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Add to that the news that Wentz is suffering from a back injury that could have him miss the rest of the season. To say the least, things were bleak.
That all changed with one huge victory in LA. The man everybody is crediting for the turnaround is Foles. After all, it was last season when Foles took over the reins from Wentz against the Rams and led the team to a victory. From there, Foles went on an epic run that brought the Eagles their first Lombardi Trophy.
The question now: Can Foles and the Eagles put everything together to make another run like last season?
Foles wasn’t exactly Hall of Fame-esque against the Rams, but he provided a breath of fresh air that the Eagles needed. That isn’t taking anything away from Wentz, who has performed valiantly this season. But it was clear that the Eagles needed a jump-start to get their offense going.
Foles went 24-of-31 for 270 yards and one interception. But that stat-line doesn’t tell the true story. Foles came into the game and decided to air it out. He helped Alshon Jeffery to his most productive game of the season. And adding Foles to the offense added the run-pass-option threat that the Eagles thrive using. The mix of 30 rushing attempts and 31 passing attempts is as balanced as you can get.
It won’t be easy for Foles and the Eagles going forward. Next week they face the AFC South leading Houston Texans. They will have to upset Houston and then win their final game of the season against Washington. Even if they do reach a 9-7 record on the season, they will still need help just to get the final Wild Card spot.
No matter what happens, the win against the Rams had everyone in the Delaware Valley feeling a sense of deja vu. Let’s see if Nick Foles has what it takes to add to his already stellar legacy as an Eagle.
