Recently waived return man Pharoh Cooper is someone the Dallas Cowboys should claim as he can be a difference maker in the postseason
It’s hard to find help late in the season, but that doesn’t mean the Dallas Cowboys shouldn’t still look for it. Recently, they were connected to a released safety in Barry Church, who they seem to have no interest in bringing in. Now, another player has become available who they should consider.
The Los Angeles Rams just waived return man Pharoh Cooper, and if anyone has paid attention this season they should know that this is an area where Dallas needs an overhaul.
On the season, Dallas is averaging just 5.3 yards per punt return and 21.4 yards on kick returns. In all, they have just 193 yards total on kick returns and haven’t come close to breaking a long one.
Cooper has missed most this season hurt, but in five games he has 277 yards returning. When he was healthy last season, he was good for 12.5 yards per punt return and 27.4 on kickoffs. He finished with 399 yards on punts and 932 on kickoffs — with one touchdown.
For years, the return game has been an issue in Dallas and there’s a chance that a healthy Tavon Austin can fix that. There’s also reason to keep Austin off special teams so he can focus more on being a weapon on offense when healthy.
Adding someone like Cooper can make that possible. It could also give them a guy capable of flipping the field — and when you have a struggling offense that could pay huge dividends.
Having said all that, Cooper is a must add for the Cowboys as they approach the postseason. He offers them a player who can be a giant upgrade to a position of need, which is rare this time of year.
