Glover Quin

Retirement rumors made the rounds last year when Glover Quin decided to forgo the team’s voluntary offseason workouts. That’s his prerogative and they are voluntary after all, but choosing to remain at his home in Houston meant sacrificing a $250,000 workout bonus.

Upon joining the team when workouts became mandatory, Quin was less than forceful in denying the rumors but made it clear his decision was about a need to spend time with his family. It stands to wonder whether the pull to spend his entire offseason in Houston is even stronger a year later, perhaps even to the point that retirement is even more of a possibility.

Regardless of Quin’s feelings, the Lions will have some decisions to make on their end. Once a guy who never came off the field, Quin has not been the same player this season. Plays it seems he would have made in the past haven’t been made and he has seen some playing time go to guys like Tracy Walker and Tavon Wilson. Quin is still getting a starter’s share of snap but Quandre Diggs is the new stalwart at safety.

Quin signed a two-year contract extension prior to last season that took his deal through the 2019 season but that final year is very much in doubt.  He is set to count $7.9 million against the cap next season but $6.25 million in cap space would be cleared if Quin, via retirement or release, is not with the team next season.
