NFL Pro Bowl 2019: 5 Players undeserving of selection
By Randy Gurzi
1. Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots
Like Tyron Smith mentioned before, this is another guy who made the Pro Bowl because of his name. Before we go much further, it has to be mentioned that Tom Brady is arguably the best quarterback of all-time. Surely, he’s the best in the past 20 years and anyone trying to say it’s Aaron Rodgers over Brady needs to just look at all of Brady’s jewelry.
He’s also been a model of consistency and durability as he’s still going strong at 41-years of age. However, this season hasn’t been his best. The Patriots are 9-5, which isn’t their norm, and Brady hasn’t had the same dominant games we are accustomed to seeing out of him.
Even so, he’s got 3,979 yards with 24 touchdowns and just nine picks. It’s a great season, but it’s also easy to argue that Andrew Luck was more deserving than Brady.
First of all, Luck overcame a sluggish 1-5 start and his team is 7-1 since then — only a game behind the Pats. He’s also thrown 34 touchdowns and 13 picks. While the interception numbers are higher, Luck is accomplishing this without much help outside of T.Y. Hilton and Eric Ebron. Brady meanwhile has Rob Gronkowski (even if he has lost a step), Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon, Sony Michel, and Cordarrelle Patterson.
This isn’t to slam Brady, and yes he makes all those players better because he’s amazing, but Luck seems like he should have been given the nod. Then again, Brady has missed so many Pro Bowls due to playing in the Super Bowl, it may not even matter.
