Let him walk: David Irving, Defensive Tackle

Expectations were high for the Dallas Cowboys defensive line this season. That’s because last year they turned a corner in a big way. Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence had a breakout season, but he wasn’t alone in that regard.

Defensive tackle David Irving also proved to be a freak — and a huge problem for offensive lines to try and slow down. An early suspension hurt the start to his season, but when Irving came back to the team he was a monster on the field. The problem was, he still wasn’t on the field very often.

Concussion issues kept him sidelined for four more games in the year and in all, Irving suited up for just eight games. Having said that, Irving was one of the more efficient defensive tackles in the NFL while he did play.

Irving finished with 22 tackles, seven sacks, a forced fumble, and six pass deflections. Hopes were high he could continue down that path in 2018, but that didn’t happen. Irving was again suspended to start 2018 and there were whispers about the front office being concerned about his dedication to playing.

The talented defensive tackle played on a one-year deal as no one matched his restricted free agent tender. After 15 games, he’s been on the field for just two. It’s probably time the Cowboys dedicated the money they’re paying Irving elsewhere.
