The 2018 NFL season didn’t go as planned for the New York Giants and now require some major retooling for their future via the 2019 NFL Draft.

The New York Giants made a statement by drafting running back Saquon Barkley in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. That statement reflected the Giants and head coach Pat Shurmur’s readiness to win now. That didn’t happen, however.

The Giants had a terrible first half of the 2018 season. Their 1-7 record quickly ended any hopes of them making the playoffs. There were a number of reasons that contributed to their struggle, one of which was the poor play of the offensive line.

Ereck Flowers flamed out further before being let go, leaving an even bigger void along the offensive line. The absence of Justin Pugh and Weston Richburg, who departed in free agency, proved detrimental. Despite the terrible play up front, Barkley managed to make it the Pro Bowl behind a phenomenal rooki season..

Since their rough start, things have taken a turn for the better. Eli Manning has looked much improved and so has the team as whole as they went 4-1 over a five-game stretch. . Unfortunately, their five-game stretch didn’t amount to much. As a matter of fact, the Giants put up a goose egg against the Titans in Week 15.

There is nothing the Giants can do to salvage the 2018 season. Did the play by the Giants hinder their chances of getting a young franchise quarterback in 2019? Should the Giants regret their 2018 draft strategy?

No — and there’s no need to dwell on the past. They can find their quarterback and more in the 2019 NFL Draft.
