Round 2: Cody Ford, OL, Oklahoma

One of the major reasons for the Washington Redskins’ disappointing second half was the injuries to the offensive line. The slew of injuries included losing Brandon Scherff for the remainder of the 2018 season and perhaps longer.

Alex Smith, when healthy, became very familiar with FedEx Fields’ turf thanks to his offensive line being banged up. In fact, the injuries to the offensive line undoubtedly contributed to lack of protection that ultimately caused Smith’s devastating injury.

Moreover, Despite Adrian Peterson doing his best Benjamin Button impression, the Redskins averaged just 4.4 yards per carry on the season. Over their last three games, however, that average has dipped to 4.0.

The injury bug has hit the Redskins over the last two seasons, especially up front. So, what they need is a player who, like Scherff, can help in the run game, but also move to tackle. Oklahoma right tackle Cody Ford has the athletic ability favorable for a tackle. However, he’s greatest strength is his…well, strength.

As a run blocker, Ford’s ability to maul his man is second to none. He does a great job using power to control his man and seal the edge. Because of his agility, he’s not a scheme specific lineman. Plugging him opposite Scherff gives the Redskins a great interior. In addition to having two solid tackles in Trent Williams and Morgan Moses.
