Jason Myers

Myers got the Pro Bowl nod for the AFC, despite Justin Tucker probably being a better kicker overall this season. Even though it’s a popularity contest, it shows the power of Myers in New York to get that nod, because fans, players, and coaches were willing to sell out votes for Myers for his tremendous season.

If anyone said they saw this season coming from Myers, that person is lying through their teeth. He had a declining field goal rate through his first three seasons in the NFL (86.7 percent as a rookie, 79.4 percent in year two, and 73.3 percent last year before being cut by Jacksonville after Week 6). In addition to the field goal woes, he also missed 12 PATs in his first three seasons.

The Jets needed a kicker, and they signed him as a free agent with a lot of disdain from many fans, and well deserved given his previous lack of success. He then turned his career around making 33 of 36 (91 percent) of his field goals in 2018, and 30 out of 33 (90.7 percent) PATs.

A lot of credit goes to Brant Boyer (who the next head coach should keep around), because the whole special teams unit improved in 2018. With his big-time improvement, Myers earned himself not just a one-year free agent deal, but one that should at least keep him around for the length of Sam Darnold’s rookie deal.
