New York Jets: 6 Free agents team should prioritize re-signing in 2019
Andre Roberts
Football is a three-phase game, and special teams is the one phase that most often overlooked, but the one that has the biggest impact on the team as a whole. Special teams plays a big role in determining field position for the offense, and in turn can determine how long the defense can rest on the bench.
Most punt and kickoffs aren’t returned in the NFL. When you have a dynamic return man, and he can be the man who sets up the offense with good field position, and gives the defense a jolt by helping the offense score. Andre Roberts is that guy.
Roberts got the Pro Bowl nod, and he will likely be a first or second-team All-Pro. He was third in the NFL in kickoff return average (29.7) and punt return average (14.1), and he was also the only player in the league to return both a punt and kickoff for a touchdown in 2018.
They need a dynamic returner to help Darnold take the next leap in his progression in 2019. Roberts earned a new multi-year contract with the Jets with his performance in 2018. The success of Roberts can only help the Jets moving forward, and he’s the future at the position.
