Green Bay Packers: Early look at potential 2019 free agent signings
By Joe Kipp
SS Landon Collins, New York Giants
Was rumored to be on the trade block before the trade deadline in October. The Giants have the option of placing the fifth-year option on him. Has made three consecutive Pro Bowls and was first-team All-Pro in 2016. A physical presence that plays all over the field. Can cover, defend the run and play in space. Will only be 25 years old next season.
FS Earl Thomas, Seattle Seahawks
Possibly the greatest safety of his generation. Six-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro. Has 28 career interceptions and 67 passes defensed. Will turn 30 years old next season, coming off another broken leg. Still, Thomas is a game-changing player that would turn the Packers’ secondary around in a hurry.
FS LaMarcus Joyner, Los Angeles Rams
Small for a safety at 5-8, 190 pounds. Still finds a way to pack a punch. Was franchise tagged in 2018 after emerging as a do-it-all chess piece for Rams’ defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Only has four career interceptions but has been extremely consistent for LA.
FS Tyrann Mathieu, Houston Texans
Like Joyner, Mathieu is undersized for the safety position (5-9, 190 pounds). Nicknamed the “Honey Badger” for his style of play. Signed a one-year deal with Houston in 2018 after spending previous five years with Arizona. Had a career year in 2015, making first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors. His career has slightly dipped due to injury, but at just 26 years old presents tremendous upside.
FS Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Washington Redskins
That’s right, after trading him away in the middle of last season for a 2019 fourth-rounder, the Packers may have the opportunity to bring back Clinton-Dix this offseason. That said, the former first-round pick has had an up-and-down career and may not be worth bringing back at any price point.
