New York Jets: Grading each unit for the 2018 season
Special Teams
New York’s special teams unit were indeed something special in 2018. Finally. Veteran Andre Roberts was selected as an AP All-Pro kick returner and he richly deserved the honor. The 30-year old Roberts led the league in kickoff returns (40), yards (1,174) and added a touchdown. Roberts also returned 23 punt returns for 324 yards and another score.
The Citadel product instantly became New York’s most dynamic weapon in the return game since the days of Leon Washington 10 years ago when Washington was the premier kick returner in the business. Roberts became the first Jets player to be named a first-team All-Pro since Darrelle Revis in 2011.
Despite a late-season mini-slump, kicker Jason Myers made the AFC Pro Bowl squad. The four-year NFL veteran enjoyed his best season by connecting on 33 of 36 field goal attempts (91.7 percent), including six of seven from 50 yards or more. Those six field goals of 50 yards or more are a new franchise record.
Myers also made seven of seven field goal attempts against the Colts in Week 6. He drilled a career-high 90.9 percent of his PAT tries as well. Myers finished fourth in the league in scoring with 118 points and is the first Gang Green kicker to ever make the NFL Pro Bowl.
Elsewhere, New York’s punt and kickoff coverage squads were decent overall while punter Lac Edwards averaged 45.9 yards per boot on 82 punts. The Hastings, Australia native’s 45.9-yard mark was his second best figure in his three seasons as a New York Jet. He had a long of 67 yards and did not have any punts blocked. He’ll likely return in 2019.
