Round 5: Parris Campbell, Wide Receiver, Ohio State

What separates the good general managers from the great ones isn’t moving up and drafting Sam Darnold with the third overall pick. That’s a no-brainer move. The thing that separates good ones from great ones in landing someone like Tom Brady in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. Parris Campbell is one of those players.

He’s not likely to become the greatest wide receiver of all-time, because it’s hard to imagine anyone ever supplanting Jerry Rice. However, Campbell is going to be a key piece to a championship run with his skills.

Yards after the catch is a key stat in today’s NFL. To prevent sacks, teams are devising plans to get the ball out of their hands more and more quickly. While Campbell does need some work on the intermediate routes, he has the propensity to take short routes, turn on the jets (no pun intended), and turn them into long gains. He also has the speed to beat coverage deep like Robby Anderson.

He also gives them something they don’t have — depth in the return game. He would give them an added return man for kickoffs. Campbell is very similar to Tyreek Hill in these regards, and he could be the weapon the Jets need along with Chris Herndon.
