New York Jets: 7-Round 2019 mock draft in early January
Round 7: Dexter Williams, Running Back, Notre Dame
On August 9, five Notre Dame players were arrested, and Williams was one of them. After the car he was in was pulled over for doing 73 in a 60 mile per hour zone, the police officer smelled a stench of marijuana, and a search dog found drugs in the car. Williams also had a gun which he didn’t have a license for. Williams was subsequently suspended for the first four games of the 2018 season.
When he returned to the Notre Dame lineup, he provided a spark, and helped propel Notre Dame into the College Football Playoff. Williams is a power runner with an ability to be explosive. He’s a north-south runner who will get the tough yard, but if given a crease, he will break the big gains.
Despite only playing eight games, he had nearly 1,000 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns on the ground. Toward the end of the season, he also showed he can be reliable out of the backfield as a pass catcher.
All in all, the Jets are getting a great second back here with home run capability. He’s not a feature back in the NFL by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s a solid pick the way backs are used in the NFL today.
