Round 2 (Pick 1): Christian Wilkins, DT, Clemson

Not only are the Colts a playoff team, but they have the Jets second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, which is basically another late first-rounder given the poor performance of Gang Green in 2018. As such, Indianapolis has the potential to beef up their defensive interior that, despite good play from the likes of Denico Autry this season, needs an upgrade.

Clemson’s Christian Wilkins can provide that for them in a big way. While he may not have the upside that his teammate in Dexter Lawrence does, Wilkins is the more sure-fire commodity coming from the 2018-19 National Champions. He is a workhorse and warrior up front that can be effective in any situation and will do anything necessary to help his team. He’s the type of guy the Colts want in their locker room in addition to being a player they need on the field.

Round 2 (Pick 2): Zach Allen, EDGE, Boston College

With the Colts’ own pick in the second round, they see Zach Allen out of Boston College fall to them. Indianapolis needs to add both depth and talent on the edge moving forward. Much like with Autry at defensive tackle, the Colts have some fine players, but need to upgrade both talent and depth moving forward. Allen falling to them here affords them the opportunity to address that need.

Allen is not the most gifted player in terms of athleticism in the 2019 NFL Draft class, but he is a guy that, like Wilkins, has a relentless motor and a high football IQ to go with great play strength off the edge. Allen might never be a superstar pass rusher off the edge given his ultimate lack of burst and quickness, but he can be a solid cog in a rotations, no doubt.
