It’s become painfully apparent that the Dallas Cowboys need a better play caller to improve in 2019. Here are the top-5 candidates to take on that role

After a 3-5 start, the Dallas Cowboys somehow reeled off seven wins in their final eight games. They then defeated the Seattle Seahawks in the first round of the playoffs but saw their season come to an end at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams in a 30-22 loss.

After falling behind 20-7, the Cowboys deserve a lot of praise for fighting back to make it a game, but they still left a lot on the table in this one. Their defense surely struggled as every Los Angeles drive seemed to last an eternity. Once the offense got on the field, they were unable to match that level of play.

While there’s plenty of blame to go around for the loss, the fact is Dallas simply lost to a better team that was more prepared for this game. In order to be better next season, they need to learn from this defeat. The biggest thing they can take from it was how uneven things looked in terms of play calling.

The Rams, typically a pass-happy team ran the ball down the throats of the Boys because it was working. Dallas, on the other hand, was winning through the air but would still rely on first-down runs and inexcusably used the jumbo formation on a critical fourth and one with was easily stuffed.

In order to improve in 2019, it’s imperative that Dallas puts the play calling into the hands of someone other than Scott Linehan. While he made changes down the stretch, he continued to be predictable when it was important and also struggled to properly utilize quarterback Dak Prescott.

With that being said, we look ahead to the coming offseason with five potential offensive coordinator hires to consider.
