2018 NFL Draft: Grading every first-round pick after rookie year
4. Denzel Ward, CB, Cleveland Browns
2018 Stats: 53 total tackles, 3 INTs, 11 passes defended, 1 forced fumble, 2 fumbles recovered
As if finding their quarterback of the future wasn’t enough, the Browns also killed it with the selection of Denzel Ward at No. 4 overall. Dubbed as the class’ top cover man, the Ohio State alum quickly proved to be an excellent addition to the Cleveland defense.
All year long, the Browns did a terrific job of creating turnovers and making life difficult for opposing passers. Although I wouldn’t say they were a great pass defense, they certainly knew how to capitalize on opponents’ mistakes. Ward was a key reason I’m capable of making that statement, as evidenced by his three interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries.
In actually, it’s the numbers you don’t see above that matter the most, though. Simply put, Ward didn’t allow much when the ball came his way. Either that, or quarterbacks chose not to throw in his direction. That in itself is a huge win, and another reason why the Browns can be considered such winners for nabbing him at No. 4.
The Browns have put the right pieces in place to start winning on a far more consistent basis moving forward. Ward figures to be a centerpiece for one of the NFL’s up-and-coming defenses, assuming he can stay healthy (he suffered two concussions in 2018).
