27. Oakland Raiders (via Dallas Cowboys): David Montgomery, RB, Iowa State

Originally when the Oakland Raiders traded Amari Cooper to the Dallas Cowboys, they thought this pick would have come much sooner. Dallas was 3-4 at the time and they then lost their first game with Cooper. Staring at a 3-5 record and on the verge of implosion, Oakland had to think Dallas was about to gift them a top-10 pick.

Then the Boys went on a run and finished 7-1, and even added a win over Seattle in the first round of the playoffs. They finally saw their season end at the hands of the Rams, but again the Raiders were mocked as Cooper played well, as did C.J. Anderson for Los Angeles, who Oakland had on their roster for a cup of coffee this season.

Watching Anderson — and Todd Gurley — dominate Dallas was a strong reminder of how a team can benefit from a bell cow back who can wear defenses down. That’s the kind of player David Montgomery is and the Raiders hope he can help their offense improve in 2019. Montgomery had more than 1,000 yards in each of the past two seasons for Iowa State and added 24 touchdowns in that time as well. Oakland will be able to lean on him often, and it would be much better than utilizing the veterans they currently have.
